Judd Starr Interview |
||
|
There is an back story to this interview I found Judd Starr twice! His PR company Luck Media had sent a press release for CFM Music Scene and I requested a CD for review. It came with the avalanche of CDs we receive ever month and was put into the stack. A few weeks later while cruising MySpace I came across a space that played "Firefly". After checking out this beautiful voice I requested an interview and asked that his rep contact me. To my amusement Luck Media contacted me saying they had sent the CD. When I told the story to Judd he laughed and said that MySpace must work. If you have the opportunity introduce yourself to Judd! He is down to earth and very easy to talk to, not the least bit stuck up. He has to be one of the most interesting and complex artists I have met. Enjoy the virtual interview and don't forget to add him on MySpace. Losillė Your bio says, " been playing music since the age of 10". Which instrument did you start with? Piano
I understand you "wrote, performed, recorded and mixed the entire album". Which element of this did you enjoy most? Well, writing is obviously where it all starts, but I often write and record as I go along, so it's a mix of those two. I look at recording, mixing and producing like painting a picture. I enjoy putting all of the pieces and textures together.
Who is influenced you most to pursue a career in music? My mother and my uncle Evan.
Those of us with no talent always wonder how song writers get the job done. Maybe you could shed some light on the process for us. How do songs come to you? Music first or lyrics? Your inspiration? Almost always music first. Honestly, it's sometimes even a mystery to me. I try and let the song "write itself" and then I'll usually look back on it and fine tune it. I think that's the best way to derive an honest feeling or emotion out of a song. I don't like going into writing with a preconceived notion. Also, I get really inspired by rhythm. Love working with drums, percussion and bass to get the backbone of the song in place.
Where do you want to be professionally in one year? I'd like to be part of a bigger entity. I mean, up until now, I've done absolutely every single possible step myself. It's been the only way to get things accomplished, but at the same time it gets tiring. I'd like to have some other people on my "team" to help out like management, a larger label, etc. I definitely want to be on more and more radio stations.
If you could meet every single fan face to face what would you want to say or for the fans to know? That they probably have not idea how important their positive feedback is to me. I'm not sure why, but in this business, there are many people who feel compelled to shoot you down and break your confidence. So when a "fan" tells me that they enjoy my music, it really inspires me to keep going.
Now for the important stuff!
What is your favorite color? Green
Do you do anything special to get ready for a performance? Not necessarily. A shot of tequila doesn't hurt though. Do you get nervous if someone you care about is watching the show? Not nervous as much as uncomfortable. They don't realize it, but they make these weird faces, like they're waiting for me to screw-up and it's distracting.
Do you really see people right in front of the stage or are they just a bunch of faces? I definitely see their faces. I try not to stare too much though. (He could stare at me I would be totally ok with that.)
Do you answer fan mail? Yep.
What do you do when you aren't being a rock star? I dream about being a "rock star". {Judd has a wonderful sense of humor. After I read his answers I couldn't wait to talk to him. He did not disappoint me. }
What are your hobbies? Sadly, music. (I know...so one-dimensional)
In high school were you in the band, performing arts, choir, debate team, athletics? Nothing. I was just "there". Did what I had to do and left. Really quiet. Not a dork, but not in the cool crowd.
Did you like high school? Hated it with a passion.
Was there one girl you never got the nerve to ask out and now you want her to know that you are a successful recording artist? Nah. Life with girls greatly improved after High School. I never thought about any of those people much.
What do you do on weekends? Music. (ha...notice a compulsive trend yet?) Go out to eat, go to a river or lake around here if the weather is good, watch a movie on occasion....typical stuff. (Are we looking at the perfect man here?)
This is the most important question that I ask. I ask it of everyone and an answer IS required!
When you become very, very, very famous can I lie and say I slept with you after this virtual interview? That depends on what you look like. I'll let you know after we meet. After all, us very, very, very famous people have to uphold an image and standard. (HA!) ( I literally laughed out loud when I read his answer. One of those snorting laughs that you hope no one hears. This is one of my favorite answers! Yes I am beautiful and very, very, very sexy, he is so going to want me to tell people I had sex with him! )
