CASSANDRA’S DREAM, the latest from
writer/director Woody Allen, introduces us to brothers Ian and Terry (played
by Ewan McGregor and Colin Farrell) who are both having serious financial
problems. They hope that their wealthy uncle Howard (Tom Wilkinson) will
help them out, and he agrees to do so….for a price. Howard needs a collegue
to disappear and wants the boys to take care of it. Thus begins the psychological and moral dilema that makes up CASSANDRA’S DREAM. The film starts off a bit slow - mostly expositional information about the brother’s lives in London and how they get themselves into financial trouble. Allen does a really good job by lulling the audience into a false sense that the film is going to continue to be a nice, slow-paced trip and then, about mid-way through, the action really picks up and the remainder is a roller coaster ride as the brothers try to deal with the choices they have made. Both McGregor and Farrell are really good in this film. Their characters almost switch places and sensibilities as they show their true colors in dealing with the stress. Also, both are really nice to look at, and if for nothing else, CASSANDRA’S DREAM is worth the price of a ticket just for that! Woody Allen is continuing his love affair with London with this film, and the scenery is really first rate. The film has a very British feel to it and I think people who might not have liked Allen’s work in the past will enjoy this film. 4 out of 5 |
